The Tax Man Arriveth

Today is “Tax Day.”

2009 Federal Tax returns need to be filed today. To make it as easy as possible for U.S. taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) defines “filed” as the envelope in which you have put your return is postmarked no later than April 15, 2010.

In prior years, post offices have remained open until midnight so that the very last minute can be squeezed out for the hapless who are still working on their taxes—like me almost every single year. On April 15th post offices around the country are the gathering places for “Procrastinators Anonymous” who would advertise the benefits they offer, but somehow never get around to it.

Some post offices offer coffee and donuts.

In my case, I usually avoid the last desperate hours on April 15th by taking the coward’s way out: I file an automatic extension. Every year I promise myself, in November or December, to do everything in January, or February at the latest. In recent years, I have managed to get first cuts of our tax liability in early February. But then the mere drudgery of compiling all the statements, filling out all the forms, doing the necessary follow-up—oh, all those things are a procrastinator’s raison d’etre.

Anyway, just a reminder. Today’s the day that the money is due. You need to pay up even if you aren’t ready to file. For the Feds, and for the state and any other jurisdiction that imposes an income tax.

Good luck!

Bill
